When selecting an SBC and designing the supporting system, considerations include how much DRAM you require, what type of storage you need (and how much) for the operating system, and what I/O capability you need (USB, serial ports and so on). Do you need a power supply or have any special power requirements? Will the CPU need a heatsink?
Nano-ITX single board computers measure 120mm × 120mm. They are fully integrated, very low power consumption motherboards, generally aimed at smart digital entertainment devices. Nano-ITX is ideal for small handheld mobile devices, retail POS terminals, battery operated applications, vehicle PCs or any other space-optimized computing system including portable ultrasound or point of care systems, or signage in embedded PCs for kiosks.
Mini-ITX is one of the most popular form factors within Embedded Motherboard ranges, and is ideal in KIOSKs, POS, and the medical and gaming industries. This cost effective solution for embedded system builders packs rich functionality into a footprint of just 170mm x 170mm.
The Pico-ITX form factor is the third generation of platform size reduction. The Pico-ITX is small, at 100mm x 720mm, fits in the palm of the hand and is more than 75% smaller than the Mini-ITX.
